What are you willing to give up for a so called night of harmless “fun”?
I’ll never forget the night I was exposed to the saying “trick or treat”! I lived in Pendleton, Oregon, I was 6 years old and I didn’t know anything about Halloween. The girl that occasionally babysat me and my brothers, asked my mom if she could take me and my 4 year old brother out for some fun and we’d come home with a bag of candy. We didn’t have costumes, but WOW! Candy! Sounded like fun to me…and as it turned out, it was a night in HELL!
The babysitter and her friend giggled as they directed us to go knock on doors and told us to say “trick or treat”…we went to several houses and our bag was filling up. I thought I was having a good time. Then we came to a house that was dark and uninviting…I remember thinking that no one was home. The babysitter and her friend pushed me and my brother up the sidewalk in the dark and told us that there was a special surprise inside. I knocked on the door and a man in a black cape and fang teeth opened the door, when he let out a fiendish laugh I drew back from him. He grabbed my arm and since I had a tight grip on my brothers hand we were pulled into the house together. A woman dressed up in black and red was waiting inside and she led us through the house…there was a long table with clear jars of stuff on the table and there were signs in front of the jars. She said that we were welcome to have anything we wanted out of the jars. I was 6 years old, but I could read very well and I recall some of the things written on the signs: Poison Spiders, Poison Frogs, Poison… All of the jars were labeled with poison. Then the woman danced around swaying and humming…it was very frightening to watch her…I could feel my heart beating in my throat and I could feel and hear the blood rushing past my ears. I had a death grip on my little brother’s hand. It was the first time in my life that I recall feeling total and abject fear…there was a coldness that hit my skin, but it was like my bones were on fire at the same time!
After what seemed like an eternity, someone else knocked on the door and it caught the attention of the man, as he ran laughing fiendishly to open the door, the woman said that she had one more wonderful treat for us…I was afraid not to follow her…she opened a door to a room that was pitch dark and then she switched on the light…I felt my knees buckle. The entire room was covered with blue glistening fabric and there posed on a chair was a skeleton wearing a black top hat. I felt myself going faint and then mustering all the courage I had left in me and still holding tightly on to my little brother, I ran toward the open door.
I was overwhelmed by a sick feeling of wanting to vomit and all I could say is that “I want to go home”! NOW!!! It was dark and I had no idea of where home was. The two girls called us cry babies and said they’d take us home. They led us away from that horrible house and the next thing I knew, we were crossing a bridge over railroad tracks. Stopping in the middle of the bridge, I was told that I wasn’t to tell my mom and dad what had happened. I boldly told them that of course, I was going to tell on them cause I knew I didn’t want her to babysit us ever again. Then she grabbed my little brother and holding him by the heels over the side of the bridge, she said that if I didn’t swear to never tell that she’d drop him…after more tears and begging for her not to hurt my brother, I swore that I’d never tell. It seemed like an eternity before she lifted him back onto the bridge and took us home.
My brother and I sobbed all the way, but we were told we had to stop crying and put on a happy face before we got to our house. I remember telling my little brother through sobs that we had to stop crying now and be happy or else they might do something worse to us…
Those girls even took most of the candy that was in our bags and only left a couple things…but ya know, to this day, I have an aversion to candy.
I never told my mom and dad…but that night haunted me in the form of bad dreams for many years.
Thankfully that same autumn, only a few weeks later in Pendleton, Oregon, I met Jesus – Yeshua.
Coming Soon: my testimony of how Jesus came into my life.
