Understanding His Plan… The Rapture ~ Part 2
The Rapture is the theological concept of believers being suddenly snatched away or “caught up” to meet Jesus Christ in the air, described in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. The English term comes from the Latin raptus (seized/carried away), which translates the Greek word harpazo (ἁρπάζω), meaning to snatch away, catch up, or take by force.
I Thessalonians 4:13-18
Caught Up is the direct translation of harpazo used in 1 Thessalonians 4:17: “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up (harpazo) together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air…”. It signifies a violent or rapid removal of believers from earth to heaven. The word “rapture” itself is derived from the Latin Vulgate translation of 1 Thessalonians 4:17, which used rapiemur (we shall be caught up/taken away)

My blog presents my stand in regard to the Rapture and why I believe what I do about the rapture. This blog continues with the detailed presentation of the different Rapture ideas, including comparison tables, key tensions, and a summary of my personal viewpoint.

Rapture Views Comparison: Church, Tribulation, and Judgments
1. Pre-Tribulation Rapture
Key Idea: The church is removed before the tribulation begins.
| Stage | Event | Scripture | Observations / Notes |
| Church Age / Present Era | Church evangelizing all people; Holy Spirit restrains lawlessness | Romans 11:25–26, Acts 1:8, Acts 13:47, Matthew 28:19–20 | Standard church mission; Holy Spirit restrains lawlessness through the church |
| Tribulation Begins | Church already raptured; only Israel and earth remain | Revelation 6–18 | Seal, trumpet, bowl judgments occur on earth; Israel-focused salvation continues |
| Church Experience | Worshiping in heaven; 24 elders and great multitude present | Revelation 4–5, 7:9–11, John 14:1–3, Revelation 4:1 | 24 elders represent leaders (apostles/patriarchs); great multitude represents all raptured believers |
| Rapture Timing | Before tribulation | 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17, Revelation 3:10 | 1) Smooth timeline 2) Aligns with protection from God’s wrath 3) Church removed before judgments |
| Second Coming / Millennium | Christ returns; church comes along and reigns with Christ | Revelation 19–20, Zechariah 14:4–5, Revelation 19:14–16 | Church participates in Millennial kingdom |
Observations / Tensions:
1. Aligns cleanly with Rev 3:10, 1 Thessalonians 5:9 2. Church absent during judgments 3. Holy Spirit restrainer removed with the church because He’s within the believers and we are promised that HE will never leave us 4. Israel is Evangelized by the 144,000 during tribulation
2. Mid-Tribulation Rapture
Key Idea: Church remains during first half of tribulation, raptured at midpoint (3.5 years).
| Stage | Event | Scripture | Observations / Notes |
| Church Age / Present Era | Church evangelizing Gentiles | Romans 11:25–26, Acts 1:8 | Same as Pre-Trib |
| Tribulation Begins | Church remains first 3.5 years; Antichrist revealed | Revelation 6–11, Daniel 9:27 | Church experiences persecution, but supposedly avoids God’s wrath |
| Mid-Trib Rapture | Church removed at midpoint | Revelation 11:12, 1 Corinthians 15:52 (THE CHURCH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN REV 11-12) | 1) No explicit midpoint rapture passage 2) Partial exposure to wrath 3) Tension with 1 Thess 5:9 |
| Tribulation Continues | Last 3.5 years of God’s wrath | Revelation 12–18 (THE CHURCH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN REV 12-18) | Israel-focused salvation continues; Antichrist fully revealed |
| Second Coming / Millennium | Christ returns | Revelation 19–20 | Church joins Millennial reign |
Tensions:
1. Partial exposure of the church to wrath
2. Timing not explicitly stated in Scripture
3. Pre-Wrath Rapture
Key Idea: Church raptured after persecution (great distress) but before God’s direct wrath.
| Stage | Event | Scripture | Observations / Notes |
| Church Age / Present Era | Evangelism; Holy Spirit restrains | Romans 11:25–26, Acts 1:8 | Same as other views |
| Tribulation Begins | Church experiences persecution and trials (this is happening right now in 3rd world countries and is expanding into the Western societies. | Revelation 6–12 (THE CHURCH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN REV 6-12) | Church present during Antichrist persecution; not yet in God’s wrath |
| Pre-Wrath Rapture | Church removed before God’s wrath (pre-rapture believes that Jesus is God and wrath begins at the opening of the 1st seal) | Revelation 6:16–17, 7:14, Isaiah 26:20–21 (THE CHURCH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN REV 6-17) | 1) Distinction between tribulation and wrath is interpretive 2) Timing not explicit in Scripture. There’s no timing for Rapture! |
| Wrath of God on Earth | God’s judgments poured out on earth. (Jesus is God, wrath begins with the first seal that HE opens). | Revelation 15–18 (THE CHURCH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN REV 15-18) | Church absent during direct wrath; Israel preserved via 144,000 |
| Christ Returns | Visible return; Millennium begins | Revelation 19–20 | Church participates in Millennial reign |
Tensions:
1. Requires interpretive distinction between tribulation vs. God’s wrath
2. Timing is not explicit in the Scriptures
4. Post-Tribulation Rapture
Key Idea: Church remains on earth through entire tribulation, raptured at Christ’s return.
My Question: WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT? Who are the saints wearing the white robes riding horses and and accompanying the ANGElS and JESUS at His 2nd coming?
WHO ARE THE Martyrs UNDER THE THRONE ASKING HOW MUCH LONGER? THEY ARE GIVEN WHITE ROBES AND TOLD TO WAIT “JUST A LITTLE LONGER”. Revelation 6:9-1
I believe these are the dead who’s bodies are raised from the grave at the Pre-Trib Rapture. Historians estimate that approximately 70 million Christians have been martyred for their faith in the nearly 2,000 years since the death of Jesus Christ.
| Stage | Event | Scripture | Observations / Notes |
| Church Age / Present Era | Church evangelizes Gentiles | Romans 11:25–26, Acts 1:8 | Same as other views |
| Tribulation Begins | Church remains entire 7 years; Antichrist revealed | Revelation 6–18 (THE CHURCH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN REV 6-18) | Church endures persecution and tribulation events |
| Church Perseveres | Believers endure suffering | Revelation 13, 7:14 (THE CHURCH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN THESE PASSAGES) | Supported by endurance passages; raises question of protection from wrath (1 Thess 5:9) |
| Rapture at Christ’s Return | Church taken with Christ | 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17, Matthew 24:30–31 | Church experiences tribulation; 1 Thess 5:9 in tension |
| Second Coming / Millennium | Jesus establishes kingdom | Revelation 19–20 | Church joins Millennial reign after tribulation |
Tensions:
1. Church experiences tribulation and possibly God’s wrath
2. Conflicts with passages about protection of believers
Comparison Summary Table
| View | Church Present During Tribulation? | Scriptural Support | Main Tension / Weak Point |
| Pre-Tribulation | No | Rev 3:10, 1 Thess 5:9, 4:16–17, John 14:1–3, Revelation 4:1 | 1) Smooth timeline 2) Church preserved from wrath |
| Mid-Tribulation | Church present first half | Rev 11:12 (interpreted), 1 Cor 15:52 | 1) Partial exposure to wrath 2) Timing not explicit |
| Pre-Wrath | Church present until just before wrath | Rev 6:16–17, 7:14, Isaiah 26:20–21 | 1) Distinction between tribulation vs. wrath interpretive 2) Timing not explicit |
| Post-Tribulation | Church remains full tribulation | Matt 24:29–31, Rev 7:14 | 1) Church faces tribulation 2) Tension with protection passages |
Rapture Views Comparison
1. Jesus as God and the Seal Judgments
Because I see Jesus as fully God, when Revelation 6 says “the Lamb opens the seals” (Rev 6:1), I understand that it is Christ Himself who is initiating the judgments. As God, Jesus is perfectly righteous and loving, and everything He does toward the earth is judgment against sin, not against His people. THERE WAS NO MAN ON EARTH OR IN HEAVEN WHO WAS WORTHY TO OPEN THE SEALS UNTIL THE LAMB TOOK THE SCROLLS. Rev 5:1-5 paraphrased From my perspective, from this very moment, any events He unleashes, whether war, famine, or pestilence, are directed at the unrepentant and the world under judgment, not toward His Bride, the Church.
2. Pre-Tribulation Rapture Logic
Since the Church is the Bride of Christ (Eph 5:25–27), it makes perfect sense to me that Jesus would remove His Bride before the tribulation begins, just as Noah and his family were preserved in the ark. My reasoning is this: if Christ is personally opening the first seal, He will not allow the Bride to be harmed. Therefore, the Church must already be safely with Him in heaven. This aligns directly with Revelation 3:10, where He promises, “I will keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world.”
3. Wrath vs. Tribulation
Some people interpret the early seals as “tribulation, but not God’s wrath” because they try to reconcile 1 Thessalonians 5:9, which says that believers are not appointed to wrath, with the idea that the Church might experience some trials. From my perspective, since the Church is already removed, I don’t have to make that distinction. The seal judgments are God’s wrath on the world, but not on the Bride. In other words, the first seal is already God’s wrath, yet it is directed only at the earth and unbelievers, not at the Church.
4. Summary of My Viewpoint
- Jesus is God → He personally opens the seals.
- The Bride is His responsibility → She will not experience the wrath of the seals.
- Pre-Tribulation Rapture → Christ removes His Bride before the judgments begin.
- Seal judgments = wrath from the beginning → Just not directed at the Church BECAUSE THE CHURCH IS GONE, THE CHURCH LEFT WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
