Saul became repurposed! Meet Paul…
Proverbs reminds us, “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand” Proverbs 19:21. God’s purposes are perfect, and even when our plans seem clear to us, His will will ultimately prevail. Saul, a devoted Pharisee, had his heart fully set on what he thought was righteousness. Yet God’s counsel transformed him entirely, turning him into Paul, the greatest ambassador of the Gospel the world has ever known.
The Apostle Paul explains that faith and salvation are dependent on hearing and responding to God’s Word, not on human merit. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God” Romans 10:13-17.
Before the Holy Spirit came to dwell in Paul, he was Saul, a zealous follower of the Law. He persecuted the followers of Jesus – Yeshua, believing that he was defending the faith. His zeal, though passionate, was misdirected because he could not yet see the full truth of God’s plan. He knew the Scriptures intimately, but he did not yet recognize Jesus as Messiah and Savior. When Jesus met him on the road to Damascus and asked, “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” Acts 9:4 He repurposed Saul’s zeal so that it would no longer destroy, but build the Church.
Zeal, as understood in Hebrew and Greek, denotes a burning passion, ardor, and fervor of spirit. Today, we might say Paul was “on fire for Jesus.” That fire became a holy force, driving him to defend the Gospel, proclaim Christ to the Gentiles, and endure persecution himself, all for the sake of God’s Kingdom.
Paul’s message was simple, yet profound. “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received and wherein ye stand. By which also ye are saved if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.
This transformation in Paul’s life reminds us that God can take even our greatest weaknesses or misdirected passions and turn them into tools for His glory. Saul, once a persecutor, became Paul, a preacher. His life demonstrates that no one is beyond God’s reach, and that the purpose God has for us may be far greater than anything we can imagine.
Paul’s ministry was marked by tireless journeys, countless letters to churches, and bold proclamation of the Gospel. He faced shipwrecks, imprisonment, false accusations, and even threats to his life, yet his commitment never wavered. Through it all, Paul exemplified the power of God to redeem, restore, and repurpose a life fully surrendered to Him.
Paul’s story encourages us to consider our own lives. How might God be repurposing your passions, experiences, or even mistakes for His glory? How can your zeal and your desire to do good be aligned with His will? Just as Saul was transformed into Paul, our hearts can be transformed when we yield fully to the Spirit and step into the calling God has designed for us.
Even in his trials, Paul’s life consistently pointed to the hope and salvation found in Christ. He reminds us that our faith is not in our own strength or knowledge but in the living God who justifies, redeems, and empowers. When we trust in Him, He can use our lives to touch countless others in ways we cannot fully see or measure.
Paul’s ministry shows us that God’s plans are often bigger and more beautiful than anything we could plan for ourselves. What begins in obedience, surrender, and faith can ripple outward to impact the world, bringing people to Christ and glorifying God in ways that last beyond our lifetime.
Personal Reflection
As I consider the transformation of Saul into Paul, I am reminded that God can take any life, any heart, and redirect it for His glory. My past mistakes, my doubts, or my misdirected passions do not disqualify me from His purposes. When I surrender fully to His will, I allow the Spirit to work within me, transforming my zeal into something holy and fruitful.
Short Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your power to redeem and repurpose our lives. Help me to recognize Your calling and to surrender my own plans so that I may serve You faithfully. Strengthen my heart, guide my actions, and use me for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
